NHS Hormone Replacement Therapy Prescription Prepayment Certificate (HRT PPC)

The new HRT PPC is now available to women who pay for HRT in England. This became available on the 1st April.

Each prescription item normally costs £9.65 , but for a one off payment of £19.30, this will cover unlimited prescriptions for a 12 month period.

However, this does not cover all HRT medications.

For example- Testosterone therapy which is recommended for symptoms of low libido, when HRT alone is not helping, is not covered. This is an unlicensed use of a drug that was licensed for men, although common and accepted practice.

The reason given as to why not all HRT is covered is that the HRT PPC will only cover medicines that are licensed to treat the menopause in the UK.
