Panorama: The Menopause Industry – Concerns Raised
The British Menopause Society have issued a statement for patients via Women’s Health Concern in response to the BBC Panorama: The Menopause Industry.
BBC One – Panorama: The Menopause Industry

“It is possible that the issues raised in the BBC One Panorama programme may be causing you to be concerned about your menopause treatment. Taking HRT, which is prescribed in line with national guidance, generally provides more benefits than risks. The type and duration of use can be discussed at your next routine review (which should be at least annually). If you have any concerns about your menopause treatment, please contact your own GP or other health professional”
There are new guidelines regarding appropriate doses of progesterone and progestogens to provide adequate endometrial protection that have been released, with a very helpful patient leaflet that details the recommended doses 33-WHC-FACTSHEET-Management-of-unscheduled-bleeding-on-HRT-AUG2024-D.pdf (womens-health-concern.org)
I have carried out an audit of all the patients that I have advised, and I am proud to say only 1 patient required advice to ask for the new recommended dose of micronized progesterone appropriate for a high strength patch (100 microgram), if she had been prescribed this combination by her GP. None of my patients have been advised very high doses of oestrogen above those recommended by the BMS.
